Use this checklist before and after move-out so the deposit timeline is easier to prove.

Give your mailing address or delivery instructions in writing and keep proof. South Dakota's 21-day deposit deadline depends on the landlord receiving that information after the tenancy ends.

Before you leave

• Take photos and video of every room.
• Save move-in condition proof if you have it.
• Clean and remove belongings.
• Confirm key, fob, garage remote, mailbox key, and access return.
• Save rent payment and deposit payment records.
• Keep a copy of your lease.

When you return possession

• Send a short written move-out notice.
• Confirm the date possession was returned.
• Provide mailing address or delivery instructions.
• Ask where to return keys if the landlord has special instructions.
• Save email, text, certified-mail, or delivery proof.

If money is withheld

If the landlord keeps any part of the deposit, ask in writing for the written reasons and, if needed, an itemized accounting of any deposit withheld.
