How the North Dakota system works
The goal is not to send the harshest letter first. The goal is to build the record in the right order so your move-out, forwarding address, possession return, itemization, deductions, and final demand are clear.
The 4-step ladder
1. Preventive move-out notice
Gives your current address, confirms possession return, and keeps the tone cooperative.
2. Deposit due follow-up
Used after the 30-day issue appears. It asks for the deposit, itemization, and written notice without jumping straight to court language.
3. Entitlement notice
Stronger and statute-backed. It presses the deadline, itemization, deduction limits, and amount owed.
4. Final demand
Final and serious. It gives one last chance before small claims or another appropriate next step.
Why Step 1 matters
North Dakota uses the last address furnished to the lessor for mailing the itemization and amount due. Step 1 handles that calmly and in writing before the record gets messy.
