First Michigan task: send the forwarding address
Before moving out in Michigan, put the forwarding-address notice at the top of your list. Within 4 days after termination of occupancy, give your landlord a written address where you can reliably receive mail. That can be a new address, P.O. Box, or another dependable mailing address.
- Put the forwarding address in writing.
- Send it within 4 days after moving out or termination of occupancy.
- Keep a photo, PDF, screenshot, or copy of what you sent.
- Use proof where practical, such as certified mail, email if appropriate, a mailing receipt, tracking, or another delivery record.
Before you return possession
- Photograph and video every room.
- Save the lease and deposit receipt.
- Find your move-in inventory checklist.
- Clean and repair what is practical.
- Record your move-out or termination-of-occupancy date.
- Plan how keys and access devices will be returned.
Address and delivery proof
- Give your forwarding address in writing if you have not already done so.
- Keep a copy of the address notice.
- Send it in a way you can prove.
- Save email, mail receipt, tracking, or delivery confirmation.
After move-out
- Watch for a 30-day itemized damages notice.
- If you receive a damages list and disagree, respond by mail within 7 days.
- Save the damages list, your response, and mailing proof.
- Track whether the landlord returns the balance or takes required action within the 45-day step.
