What to do first
Start with the document that matches your situation. If you are still moving out, Step 1 is usually the right place to begin because it gives mailing address or delivery instructions and documents move-out.
- If you are moving out: use Step 1
- If 30 days passed after move-out and address/instructions: use Step 2
- If written statement, deductions, or payment remain unresolved: move to Step 3 when appropriate
- If you are ready for a final demand: use Step 4
Keep proof
Save the letters, delivery records, emails, screenshots, photos, itemized statements, refund records, and any landlord response. Iowa timing depends on proof that the tenancy ended and the landlord received your mailing address or delivery instructions.
