About this site
I am Andrew Grechniv.
About 30 years ago, I lost a security deposit on an apartment in Hell's Kitchen. I was young, the money mattered, and once I moved away the landlord simply stopped responding. I never saw the deposit again.
That experience stayed with me because a lot of renters still deal with the same thing now. The landlord delays. The deductions are vague. The explanation does not add up. Or the landlord just goes quiet and hopes the renter lets it go.
DepositBackUSA grew out of that problem: practical help from lived experience, made by renters, for renters.
Why this exists
Security deposit disputes usually are not solved by one dramatic letter. They are about timing, documentation, follow-up, and knowing which facts matter under state law.
For Iowa renters, the address step matters. Giving a mailing address or delivery instructions in writing can be the difference between a clean deposit timeline and a harder dispute.
What the Iowa Recovery System is
The Iowa Recovery System is a four-step sequence. It starts before the dispute hardens, then moves from a polite move-out notice to a firm follow-up, a statute-backed entitlement notice, and a final demand if needed.
You can use the free Iowa guides to work through the process yourself. The paid system is the shortcut: the sequence, timing, and editable letters already organized in one place.
