Made by renters, for renters.

Get Your Deposit Back

If you moved out of an Iowa rental, the practical questions are whether you gave mailing address or delivery instructions, whether the landlord sent the deposit or written reasons on time, and whether any deductions are lawful.

DepositBackUSA helps you understand the rule, protect the record, and use the right written step at the right time.

Start based on your situation

Watch this step

In Iowa, the 30-day deposit clock depends on the tenancy ending and the landlord receiving your mailing address or delivery instructions.

Give that information in writing and keep proof. If you do not provide it within one year after termination, Iowa law says the deposit reverts to the landlord and you forfeit the right to the deposit.

The short version

Iowa generally gives the landlord 30 days after termination of the tenancy and receipt of your mailing address or delivery instructions to return the deposit or send a written statement showing the specific reason for withholding.

If the landlord keeps money, the landlord bears the burden of proving the reason. If the landlord does not send the required written statement on time after receiving your address or instructions, the landlord forfeits the right to withhold any part of the deposit.

This is a system, not one letter

One demand letter can help, but Iowa disputes usually move better when the written record is built in order: move-out, address or delivery instructions, deadline follow-up, statute-backed entitlement notice, and final demand if needed.

  1. Step 1 gives mailing address or delivery instructions and documents move-out.
  2. Step 2 follows up after the Iowa 30-day issue appears.
  3. Step 3 presses Iowa Code Section 562A.12, written statement, and withholding rights.
  4. Step 4 gives one final written chance before escalation.
