Move-Out Checklist (Texas)
If you want the cleanest possible record for a Texas deposit dispute, start before the move-out date.
Texas makes one point especially important: give your forwarding address in writing and keep proof.
Before you move out
- take clear photos of every room
- remove belongings and clean the unit
- review your lease for move-out instructions
- collect receipts for anything you repaired or cleaned
- prepare the forwarding address you want the landlord to use
On move-out day
- take another full set of photos
- return all keys and access devices
- note the exact date possession was returned
- keep proof of the handoff if you can
- save any final walkthrough or inspection messages
Right after move-out
- send your forwarding address in writing if you have not already
- save a copy of that notice
- track communications and any refund or deduction statement
- keep mailing proof, email records, or delivery confirmation
Why this matters in Texas
The usual Texas dispute turns on a few facts:
- when you surrendered the premises
- whether the forwarding address was given in writing
- whether anything was returned or itemized within 30 days
If those facts are clear, the next steps are usually much easier.
