Give the landlord your new mailing or forwarding address in writing and keep proof.

Montana lets the landlord mail the written list and refund to the new address you provide, or to your last-known address if you do not provide one. Missing the new-address step does not erase the amount owed, but it can make the cleanest proof harder.

The short version

Montana generally requires the landlord to provide a written list of any rent due and any damage or cleaning charges, together with any refund balance, within 30 days after termination of the tenancy or within 30 days after surrender and acceptance of the premises, whichever occurs first.

There is also a faster 10-day return rule if there are no damages, no cleaning required, no unpaid rent, and you can show that no utilities are unpaid.

This is a system, not one letter

One demand letter can help, but Montana deposit disputes usually move better when the record is built in order: move-out, new address, surrender, cleaning and utilities proof, deadline follow-up, statute-backed entitlement notice, and final demand if needed.
