If your Alabama landlord has not returned your security deposit, start by sorting out the timeline and the mail.
The usual question is not just "Did I move out?" It is whether the tenancy ended, possession was returned, and the landlord mailed a refund or itemized accounting within 35 days.
Check the timeline first
Ask:
- When did the tenancy end?
- When did you return keys or otherwise give possession back?
- Did you give a forwarding address in writing?
- Did the landlord mail anything within 35 days?
- Did you receive a refund, check, envelope, or itemized accounting?
Write those dates down before sending a stronger demand.
If the landlord kept money
If the landlord withholds any part of the deposit, Alabama requires an itemized accounting within the same 35-day period.
Save the accounting, any refund check, envelope, postmark, email, text, and returned-mail record.
If nothing arrived
Send a clear written demand. Keep it focused on the timeline, the amount of the deposit, your forwarding address, and what you have not received.
Use: Alabama security deposit demand letter
Do not let old mail sit unresolved
Alabama has a 180-day rule for unclaimed deposits and outstanding checks. If you expected a refund or accounting and nothing arrived, follow up in writing and keep proof.
