North Carolina Move-Out Checklist
The best time to protect your deposit is before the dispute starts.
North Carolina's deadline depends on both termination of the tenancy and delivery of possession. Your checklist should preserve those dates clearly.
Before you leave
- save your lease and deposit payment proof
- confirm the date the tenancy ends
- schedule or request any move-out inspection if appropriate
- take clear photos and video before removing the last items
- clean ordinary areas and remove belongings
- document keys, access devices, and possession delivery
Give a current address
North Carolina has an address rule for deposits. Give the landlord a current mailing address in writing and keep proof.
This helps avoid confusion about where the accounting or refund should be sent.
After possession is delivered
Save proof of the date possession was delivered. That may include a key return receipt, email, text, move-out confirmation, or other record.
Then track the 30-day accounting/refund period and the 60-day final-accounting fallback if the landlord sends only an interim accounting.
