The easiest deposit dispute to win is the one you make clearer before it starts.
In North Carolina, focus on the end-of-tenancy date, possession delivery, condition evidence, and the address where the landlord should send the accounting or refund.
Before move-out
- confirm your move-out date in writing
- take move-in and move-out photos
- document cleaning and repairs
- return keys or access devices in a way you can prove
- send your current mailing address in writing
- keep a copy of everything
After move-out
Track the 30-day accounting and refund period from termination of the tenancy and delivery of possession. If the landlord sends only an interim accounting because the full claim cannot be determined, track the 60-day final-accounting deadline.
