Before you move out, build the record you will wish you had if the deposit gets delayed.
New Jersey's ordinary deadline is 30 days after lease termination, but the fight often turns on proof: when you left, when keys were returned, what condition the apartment was in, what interest or account notices exist, and where the landlord should send the refund or itemization.
Before move-out
- save the lease and renewal
- save deposit receipt or payment proof
- save account/institution notice and annual interest notice or credit records
- photograph every room, appliance, floor, wall, fixture, and known old condition
- send your current or forwarding address in writing
- ask where keys and access devices should be returned
On move-out day
- take final photos and video
- return keys, fobs, mail keys, garage clickers, and access cards
- get written confirmation if possible
- save texts, emails, portal messages, receipts, or photos showing key return
- keep a copy of any walkthrough or inspection notes
After move-out
Track:
- lease-end date
- move-out date
- key-return or possession-return date
- 30-day deadline
- refund received
- interest or earnings included
- itemized deduction list received
- delivery method and envelope or tracking records
If the landlord sends deductions, compare them to actual damage beyond ordinary wear and tear or money due under the lease.
